Q&A: Changes to the Actuaries’ Code, 2025

What is being changed?

Three changes are being made to the Actuaries’ Code.

In brief, the changes to the Code are as follows:

  1. An amendment to the existing Amplification1.1 of Principle 1 (Integrity) to ensure greater clarity around the current requirement.  The amended wording is: “Members must show respect for everyone others in the way they conduct themselves”.&Բ;
  2. An additional Amplification has been added to Principle 1 (Integrity). The new Amplification 1.2 states “Members must not subject others to bullying, victimisation or harassment,”. The existing Amplification 1.2 will be renumbered to 1.3.
  3. An additional Amplification has been added to Principle 5 (Speaking Up). The new Amplification 5.2 states “Members should speak up if they believe that others are being treated unfairly or excluded unreasonably”. The existing Amplifications 5.2 to 5.4 have been renumbered.

When do these changes come into effect?

The changes will come into effect on 25 September 2025.

Will these changes apply to all Members?

The changes made are to the Actuaries’ Code, which applies to all IFoA Members, regardless of where geographically they are based or working.

As with all provisions of the Actuaries’ Code, these provisions will apply to all Members’ conduct in relation to an actuarial role, and to other conduct where it could reasonably be considered to reflect upon the profession.

More information on the scope of the requirements of the Actuaries’ Code can be found in the Actuaries’ Code Guidance (linked below).

Do I need to do anything to respond to these changes?

Members are encouraged to read through the changes so that they are familiar with the updated Code and the amended requirements.

New material has also been added to the Actuaries’ Code Guidance to assist members in understanding how to apply them in practice.

Will provide any other materials or help with understanding the changes?

If Members have specific queries about application of the changes, or have particular situations they would like some help with, support is available through ’s Professional and Regulatory Support Helpdesk, which provides access to team as well as a panel of experienced actuaries.

There will also be a webinar between 08:45 and 09:15 (UK time) on 11 September 2025, which will explain the changes and how those are expected to apply in practice.

The IFoA plans to compile a note of any frequently asked questions asked and to publish them along with ’s answers.

Members should also look out for new Professional Skills Training content, which will help with understanding the application of the new requirements.

Why has made these changes to the Code?

The reasons for introducing the changes are explained on website. This follows an extensive period of engagement and consultation.

The IFoA’s reports of the consultations and feedback can also be found on website.
